Stills

Here is some test shots we took to get a picture or idea of what the filming would look like.

There is a picture of the bedroom where the main character will be filmed waking up at the begening of the music video. It will be a mid shot but also birds eye view although this picture is at an angle when we film it will be birds eye view like the one below it. Instead of the character getting ready we will show her stretching or whiping her eyes, and looking at the window kind of remember that she has to get a bus, that's where there will be a child (Kim's Niece) standing with a hand made bus stop sign.

After that we will be filming the main character coming down the stairs and then opening the door, we wouldn't have enough time her getting ready so we are going to skip it from her stretching to coming down the stairs but suttely so it doesn't just jump. After this we will film her walking up the street and waiting at a bus stop, the same child at the window will be around the corner and pretended to be the bus stop sign with the hand made bus stop sign.

We are also hopefully going to film in the music shop in cambridge called Ken Stevens/Millers. This part will be for when the girl is sitting down in the shop playing one of their pianos.

‎

If we're not allowed to film here then we could also try the piano shop in Fulbourn.

Lyrics..

Here are the lyrics to our chosen song, The Hush Sound - A Dark Congregation.

A dark congregation of familiar faces gathered around the quiet earth
A red rose fell upon the soft snow, prayers were whispered so slow from our mouths

Our breath rose in the cold like a hundred souls escaping

Save me, I am swallowed by the guilt of this
You're gone, sleeping in the dust
We will not let time erase us
Person is waking up, making breakfast, getting out of house, locking door, getting on bike.

We are surrounded by all of the quiet sleepers inside the quiet earth
A fear that I cannot shape - you dared to kiss the face of the night

Our lips were cold as clay, we couldn't speak anyway

Save me, I am swallowed by the guilt of this
You're gone, sleeping in the dust
We will not let time erase us
Walking around town, camera following their day.

Our breath rose in the cold like a hundred souls
We, we are alone, I know you're gone

Save me, I am swallowed by the guilt of this
You're gone, sleeping in the dust
We will not let time erase us
Following the person around town to destination.

Genre Specific Mise-En-Scene

Our music video is based on the genre Indie, we are following most of the obvious Indie Mise-En-Scene. For Example...

The Interior and Locations:
Our locations are going to be mainly her house and the streets around her, in her room it will be very quirky, interesting, weird and Random. This is in many Indie videos eg.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhC4E055OsY
Kate Nash's Video, Foundations. She has a crazy house, and typical Indie Interior.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Rjc0Q2ktgw
Also Jack Penate's Video, Second Minute or Hour. He is running down the street and the camera is following him, as we want to follow our main character in some points of the video.

Clothes and Performance:
In our music video we want to follow the conventions of the clothes that Indie bands wear. For example they wear quite quirky, original, bizarre and unique clothes. In our video we are going to have the main girl wearing very indie outfits and the band slightly less indie and more casual clothing. This is in videos eg.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpLXQorSQe8
Florence And The Machine's Video, Drumming Song. This has bizarre outfits. The video also conforms to the performing side of Indie, as she is mainly performing throughout the whole song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGrZkUQ6_r8

Also Foals's Video, Balloons. This has a huge convention to Goodwins points about indie genre having a lot of performance by the band in their videos.

Asking Permission...

This is a print screen of the email we sent the band on Myspace, to make the artist aware that we'd be using their track. We decided to contact them through Myspace as its a good way to contact, because of their busy lives and we would be able contact in person. Myspace music has a huge social network and has launched many artists careers, for example Lily Allen. Indie bands in particular usually use Myspace music to launch themselves.

Timeline/ Storyboard/ Shot list.

Here are some images from our planning of our Timeline, Storyboard & Shot list.
Timeline.

Our timeline shows roughly where our clips will be cut in throughout the song.

Storyboard.

Our Storyboard has rough sketches of what shots to use in the video and when. The reason for this is for a guide for the shots so that its clear to whoever is reading it what will be filmed.

Shot List.

Our shot list tells us what is included in each shots, the framing of that shot and information like location, props and costumes. Its a written version of the storyboard.

Filming Schedule

We want to film over the weekend of 10th & 11th October, so will be getting the camera out on Friday 9th October. Over this weekend we plan to get the majority of our filming done with the shots on the town we will hopefully shoot most of them in town on the Saturday & on the Sunday we will have the band and will film them either inside/outside the supermarket.

From this we will look at what we had got shot from that weekend, and then decide from there if we need more footage, and what of then when to take a camera out over night to get the remaining footage.

Target Audience

Our target audience would ideally be all ages from late teens onwards, obviously not too young, but would probably be more popular with people around the age of 15-25. Our certificate for this would be certificate 15 as some lyrics may influence them into negative behavior. We feel people under 15 would be more easily influenced by their controversial lyrics and this may lead to negative behavior. For example, 'You're gone, Sleeping in the dust, We will not let time erase us' as it briefly relates to death.

Not suitable for persons younger than 15. Persons younger than 15s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The content is strong in impact.

Music Video Mise-en-scene.

Location: House, Bus stop, on bus, music shop, tesco.

Clothing: Interestingly quirky fashion style, unlike any present fashion. Band, Casual everyday clothing with a hint of quirkiness.

Props: Props in the house would be bed, window, curtains, duvet, pillow. Clock for time flying by. Instruments.

Lighting: for our lighting it will be natural, but in the supermarket it will be artificial as their lights are.

Goodwin's Points

  1. Genre Conventions. The Genre of The Hush Sound is Indie/Alternative Rock. Our music video will folllow these conventions as the video follows the girl going about her daily life & favourite places from home, to the bus stop, on the bus, at the music shop & supermarket, this is conventional of the indie genre. It will also follow these conventions with a performance and a different/Alternative performance being in a supermarket. An example of an indie band whos video follows them through out their could be TheView - Same Jeans as it follows him from his bed to his bands Gig. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQzW2aKjoRo
  2. Lyrics & Visuals. We could link our lyrics into a couple of places through out the video, for example for the lyrics 'we will not let time erase us' we came up with the idea of a shot of a clock but the hands are moving fast indicating that time is going quickly. We also thought that for 'A dark congregation of familar faces' would be good for when shes waiting at the bus stop as she'd recognise whoever was waiting from waiting there with them everyday. When we cut the singing into the video it should be in sync when we finish it.
  3. Music & Visuals. We will have the relevant instruments to the song in our video. We plan to have a band, hopefully performing in somewhere different like tesco as it is altrernative & to use a piano in a music shop. We make the band & piano playing in sync when we cut it into our video.
  4. Demands of the Record Label. We can't really promote the real band as we do not have them & we can't link our video to any of the hush sound's as they don't have any.
  5. Voyeurism. The idea of voyeurism could be relevant when she is in her own little bubble and everything seems great.. as this is what she's feeling and what you wouldn't usually know about her.
  6. Intertextuality. We could link The Hush Sound's existing albums into our video through a poster or CD at the supermarket, But when we're at the Supermarket we want to be filming down the frozen food isle as the lyrics to the song are quite cold with lyrics like 'Soft snow', 'Our breath rose in the cold' & 'Our lips were cold as clay', So the only way we could sneak the CD in would be a shopper walking by with it in their basket.

Digi Pack

DVD Cover
For our DVD cover we researched several other bands of the same genre and their CD covers to get an idea of the right style for our own DVD as they are usually the same or very similar. We like the style of Muse's Cover art for their single 'Uprising' it suits the genre because its unlike any other covers.
We also liked the cover for Paramore's Single 'Ignorance' as its also unique, Both this and the Muse cover are photos not drawings/Paintings
Then we looked at some different DVD covers. We found some for Muse which were live DVDs, one we found was of their Live Absolution tour after the release of their Absolution album.. the images are similar but not exactly the same, they both give off the same effect with the shadows.

We liked Madonna's DVD cover aswell as it is of her but she is made to look like Marylin Monroe who is a icon, its also in a similar style to Andy Warhol paintings of Monroe. It also seems rebelious, like the Punk style of Blondie, which is more clearly shown in the art work for Madonna's CD Album cover for the same album with the same Monroe Style & the same colours as the Blondie image.

From looking at existing DVD covers we can see that they usually link to the Album art in some way.. usually using the same image but tweaking it slightly, either changing the colours/wording/composition. Most artists of the same genre as we're working with dont usually have DVDs of their music videos but just of their Live perfomances from that album, The artwork they use is usually similar aswell, like the Muse artwork were they have changed their model & the angle from the album.

Poster/Advert

As we had already looked at Muse for our research for the DVD cover we searched for their posters. For the album they had another version of the absolution photo as their image on it, the title, band name, realise date and a website. We then looked at tour posters which seemed to had some sort of image relating to the band at the top & their band name/logo with the dates underneath. The knights of Cydonia tour poster seemed to sell more of the band as it has the band name, dates and info, but also sells a single as 'Knights of Cydonia' is a single off their Black holes & revelations album also having a similar artwork to what the single art is.

As we liked the style of Lily Allens video we looked at her tour posters. Both her poster promote her with both showing her image & name, they also both have a image of her album in the bottom corner to promote that and of course her tour dates. They also advertise downloads and promote the singles already released whilst giving the information on the tour and where to buy tickets from.

For our DVD cover we are going to have a picture of the lead woman on the front in black & white and the background around her is going to be bright and colorful. This is a similar idea to one of their previous album covers 'The goodbye blues' where they're in dull colours and their surroundings are more colorful. We also thought that for our poster it would be a similar image but at the top, tour dates underneath and other information.
